Programme Overview

Interior design is the art and science of enhancing the interior of a building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space. Students learn skills in a wide range of areas including design concepts, interior elements, furnishings, applied visual arts and design principles in both residential and commercial spaces. They are equipped to take higher education in their specialization. We provide an environment for learning, creating and not just classrooms and curriculum. We believe that creativity is an innate quality; we only teach the principles and tools. Every person is gifted with her own creativeness and we provide a platform to bring out its value. The department was incepted in 2003. We the PG – Department of Home Science Interior Design and Decor take pride in saying that we are the one and only college under the University of Madras incepted post-graduation course in 2013. Research work creates awareness among society and finds solutions for new and existing problems. This course surely enables the students in the teaching field. The department strives to groom the students to face the competitive world with full confidence.

Objective of Department Association

"The B.Sc. Programme in Home Science – Interior Design & Décor aims to:"

  • 1 Strengthen Disciplinary Knowledge by equipping students with comprehensive theoretical and practical understanding in Family Resource Management, Interior Design, and Décor to address real-world residential and commercial challenges.
  • 2 Develop Effective Communication Skills to enable students to present scientific and design concepts confidently through oral, written, and ICT-enabled platforms, and to engage professionally with domestic and commercial clientele.
  • 3 Enhance Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Abilities to analyze spatial, functional, and aesthetic issues and provide innovative, sustainable solutions in interior planning.
  • 4 Promote Research and Scientific Reasoning by training students in qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis, interpretation, and evidence-based design decision-making.
